ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- University of New Mexico Athletics and the Lobo Club are pleased to announce two record gifts to UNM Volleyball from Fred K. Rose and Alumni Letterman Tracy (Shipman) Henderson.

Through his gift, the Fred K. Rose Volleyball Endowment will be established to fund student-athlete scholarships. It is the largest gift in UNM Volleyball history, a donation three times the size of the previous high (which was a group gift).

"It is important to give because I know that future student-athletes will be able to concentrate on getting a degree and playing volleyball without having to worry about how their education is paid for," Rose said.

Fred K. Rose with Lobo Volleyball in Milan last summer. Rose has only missed four home matches in the past 12 seasons.

He has been a loyal supporter of the UNM Women's Volleyball program for years and has only missed four home matches over the last 12 seasons. Rose worked over 14 years at the UNM Bookstore and recently retired in June 2012. Prior to his years of service at UNM, Rose worked for Montgomery Wards for 24 years in Chicago; Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and in his hometown of Joplin, Missouri. He graduated from Missouri State with a degree in business 1971.

Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs stated, "We greatly appreciate the generous support of Fred Rose and the Henderson Family. Through such generosity, they have, and will greatly bless, the lives of our volleyball student-athletes for years to come."

Through their gift -- the second-largest single gift made to Lobo volleyball -- the Henderson family generously supports the volleyball and baseball programs. Tracy (Shipman) Henderson played outside hitter for the Lobos from 1989-1991. During that time, UNM volleyball was ranked as high as No. 7 nationally.

"When I played we didn't have all the resources we needed as a team, so my family and I feel that it is really important to give back to help Coach Nelson continue to build a great program here at UNM," Henderson said.

In addition to being a student-athlete, Henderson served as an assistant coach for Lobo Volleyball from 1994-1997. Tracy, a Los Alamos native, met Pete Henderson (a pitcher on the baseball team) at UNM. They have three sons: Jack, Sam, and Peyton.

Coach Jeff Nelson said, "We are so fortunate that Fred and Tracy have stepped up to help us make Lobo Volleyball even stronger in the future. These are unprecedented gifts for our program, and we are humbled and excited by their generosity."

Each month, supporters of UNM Athletics and the Lobo Club will be highlighted for their generosity to enhance the student-athlete experience at UNM.
