ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico Lobo volleyball team began spring team practice last week in preparation for its three-tournament and one match spring schedule set to begin the end of this month.

The Lobos travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the University of Arizona Tournament on March 23. New Mexico will host its own tourney in the Johnson Center (South Gym) all day on April 6, and then travels to Fort Collins, Colo., on April 13 for a tournament hosted by Colorado State.

The Lobos conclude spring play at home on April 17 with a match against local All-Stars/Lobo Alumni.

Head coach Jeff Nelson says the spring schedule features a number of challenging opponents, which is just what his squad needs.

"This is a great spring schedule as it allows us to play a number of outstanding programs and gain valuable experience," Nelson said. "We will have matches against quality opponents like Colorado State, Arizona State, Arizona, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, UTEP and some others. It will be fun to see our young group back out on the court again in a few weeks."

Lobo fans will have the opportunity to watch the team in action twice in April -- at the home tournament and the alumni match.

"It's great to have two home dates for spring," Nelson said. "We have great fans and it gives them a chance to come out and see the team.

"It also gives us the chances to play against some of our alumns and mix things up with the Lobo alumns a bit."

Soon-to-be-senior Miquella Lovato says the Lobos' spring schedule will help the team figure out what it needs to work on over the summer.

"I think it's great we're playing higher quality teams this spring because it gives us an idea of where we're at as a team and what we'll need to work on for fall," Lovato said.

She echoed Nelson's enthusiasm for hosting a tournament and closing the spring season with a friendly match against former Lobos and local volleyball standouts.

"It's always so exciting to play at home because we have our fans," she said. "Playing the alumni is always fun because we are close to most of the girls, which makes us even more competitive."
