Complete 2013 AVCA All-Region Teams

Chantale Riddle, who last week earned All-Mountain West honors for the second straight year, was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Pacific South Region Team, giving her All-Region honors for the second straight year as well.

Last year, Riddle was named to the AVCA All-West Region Team, but this year, the AVCA added two regions this season to the postseason awards program, splitting up the Mountain West teams among the Pacific North and Pacific South regions. The additions were made to recognize the elite talent across the nations.  The teams are now specialized by position with the 14-member teams including five outside hitters, three middle blockers, two setters, one libero/defensive specialist and three at-large selections. Previously, the top 14 players, regardless of position, were selected.

Regardless of region, position, anything really, Riddle was a lock for All-Region honors, and she will now be advanced to the All-America ballot.  Riddle’s honor is the ninth time a Lobo has earned All-Region honors under Jeff Nelson, and she joins Taylor Hadfield as a two-time nominee.  Other recent Lobo greats to be honored with All-Region accolades include Allison BuckAshley RhoadesJade MichaelsenLisa Meeter, Hadfield (twice) and Jeanne Fairchild.

In 2013, Riddle once again led the team in kills (468) and kills per game (4.11).  She easily blew past the 1,000 kill mark and currently stands at 1,182, which is fifth all-time.  She will enter the 2014 season just 397 away from Tania Gooley’s school record of 1,579 kills, set from 1991-94.  Riddle’s 468 kills and 4.77 points per set easily led the Mountain West.

“Chantale had another outstanding year for us, and I am thrilled for her to get this great honor,” said head coach Jeff Nelson.  “She has led the Mountain West offensively for the past two seasons and just continues to take her game higher.”

The AVCA All-America teams will be announced next week.  Riddle is attempting to become the first player in under Jeff Nelson to be honored by the AVCA All-America program twice, as she was an honorable mention pick last year.  Pauline Mansir is the only two-time All-America selection in UNM history, earning First Team honors in both 1990 and 1991.
