ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico has won back-to-back Mountain West classroom titles.

A day after the Lobos earned the most Academic All-Mountain West selections for Spring 2014, they earned  the most Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Awards among the 11 schools in 2013-14 (Hawai‘i, the 12th school, competes in football only).

The conference announced Tuesday that a record 651 student-athletes were named Scholar Athletes, surpassing the mark of 632 set last season. Of those 651, UNM contributed 117 Scholar-Athletes – 25 more than the next leading institution.

The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.

According to the Mountain West, 50 of its student-athletes had at least a 4.0 grade-point average for two or more terms and 85 student-athletes were recognized in multiple sports.

Mountain West athletics consist of 16 sports, and UNM had the most Scholar Athletes in nine of them during the 2013-14 school year. Lobo athletic teams topping the list included baseball (six), women’s basketball (tied for most with five), men’s cross country (11), women’s cross country (14), women’s soccer (15),  men’s tennis (5), women’s tennis (7), women’s track and field (26*) and volleyball (5).

UNM also had one Scholar Athlete in men’s basketball, five in football, two in men’s golf, five in women’s golf, six in softball, 16 in women’s swimming and diving and 13* in men’s track and field.

* -- denotes that the 11 men's cross country and 14 women's cross country Scholar-Athletes also were honored in track and field.
