INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ---Three programs, men’s basketball, men’s tennis, and women’s golf, have been honored by the NCAA in its annual APR Public Recognition Report for having APR scores in the top 10 percent for its sports.  The University of New Mexico had the most sports recognized in the Mountain West.

UNM has now had 12 sports recognized by the NCAA for superior APR scores since the first APR Public Recognition announcement in 2006.

Full APR scores will be released next Wednesday, May 14, and UNM is expected to have all 21 sports reach the 930 threshold established by the NCAA for the multi-year rate.  That would mark the fourth straight year that all UNM programs have achieved the 930 benchmark. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

The announcement marks the first NCAA public recognition for men’s basketball and for men’s tennis, and it’s the second for women’s golf.  The women’s golf team last received NCAA public recognition for the 2004-05 APR numbers, which were announced in May of 2006.  Both the men’s basketball and the men’s tennis teams were the only Mountain West programs in those sports to be honored.  Women’s golf was joined by Boise State and Fresno State.

Both men’s tennis and women’s golf have perfect 1000 APRs for its multiyear rate, and men’s basketball has a 990, the highest APR score in the program’s history.  All three programs had perfect 1000s for the 2012-13 single-year APR score.

“Having three teams recognized by the NCAA shows that our coaches and student-athletes truly understand how to compete on the field and in the classroom,” said Paul Krebs, Vice President for Athletics.  “Henry Villegas and his staff in the Student Success Center work very hard along with our coaches to help our student-athletes reach their full potential.  We have several other programs right that were right on the cusp for getting recognized today as well, so I’m very proud of the work our student-athletes have put in”
