ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico Women's Basketball redshirt sophomore Whitney Johnson has suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury. Johnson ruptured her Achilles tendon during a non-contact drill in an offseason workout session.

"It's very tough for us to lose Whitney for the season. She's worked extremely hard to come back from her previous injury and was an integral part of our team last year. She really came into her own last season and was working hard to improve next season. It's always tough to see someone go down with a season-ending injury, and to see it happen again to Whitney is very unfortunate," said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez.

Johnson, who redshirted the 2011-12 season after an ACL injury, was a fixture in the post in her first season of action with the Lobos. The Utah native appeared in all 31 games while starting in 18 of them. She led the team in field goal percentage (.551) while averaging 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 18 minutes per game last season.

The program will apply for a medical redshirt on behalf of Johnson in hopes of getting her another year of eligibility.
