ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Just three days after their exhibition opener against New Mexico Highlands, the New Mexico Lobos will take to the court for their second and final exhibition on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in The Pit versus Western New Mexico. Saturday’s 81-48 win over the Cowgirls saw a little bit of everything as expected in the first action of the season. The Pit, with a listed attendance of 5,553, gave the game a regular season atmosphere. As Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez and the Lobos look forward to their second exhibition opener, they will look to improve from Saturday’s jumping off point.

SHARING THE WEALTH ON SATURDAY

The Lobos shared the ball very well against the Cowgirls, especially to begin the game. New Mexico had six assists on their first seven made field goals of the game. Bryce Owens, who led all conference freshmen in assists last season, was able to tally six assists in the game (averaged 3.7 apg last season). She and fellow point guard Brooke Allemand combined for eleven of UNM’s 20 assists for the game.

Yet as Owens and Allemand carried the bulk of the passing from the point guard spot, there was plenty of sharing throughout the Lobo lineup. Eleven of the 13 players to see action on Saturday tallied an assists, which included front line players Khadijah Shumpert, Deeva Vaughn, Josie Greenwood, Kianna Keller and Josie Greenwood.

BALANCED SCORING ATTACK

Before the season began, Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez pointed at the team’s depth as more than just bodies on the bench. She alluded to scoring depth as well.

“It (scoring) will be by committee because different people can have good games. It will be interesting because last year when people stopped Caroline (Durbin) they stopped us. Now we have Ebony and Deeva in the paint, and we have Antiesha on the wing. We’ve got Sara back who is a lot more confident with Bryce also back whose playing with a lot of confidence,” Sanchez continued. “I just think we can be like a lot of those teams we had in the past that. If you stopped one person, two or three more would step up.”

New Mexico had a trio of Lobos score in double figures (Brown, Halasz and Shumpert). All eleven players who played and attempted a shot scored for New Mexico.

THE IMPACT OF FOULS

Much has been made of the NCAA’s point of emphasis to clean up the game. Saturday’s exhibition was a prime example of that. The Lobos drew seven New Mexico Highland team fouls within the first two minutes of the game.  A total of 51 fouls were called on both teams as 53 total free throws were attempted. This not only affects the frequency of fouls called, but it will also put more importance on free throw shooting.

The Lobos were hit and miss at the line on Saturday. They shot 9-16 (56.3%) at the line in the first half but were much improved 10-14 (71.4%) in the second half.

FRESH FACES IN THE PIT

Five players hit Bob King Court for the first time in a New Mexico uniform on Saturday. The four freshmen and one junior are part of a talent group of newcomers bolstering the New Mexico roster. Redshirt junior Ebony Walker played in her first game for the Lobos after sitting out the season after transferring from Texas Tech. Walker was joined by freshmen Brooke Allemand, Josie Greenwood, Kianna Keller and Marissa Perry.

NEW LOOK LOBOS

Fans may have noticed the Lobos donning new silver jerseys during Saturday’s exhibition. The team received new uniforms this season that will give the team multiple looks for fans this season.
