ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico Women's Basketball program and Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez have announced the addition of Lauren Newman to the 2013 recruiting class. Newman, a native of El Paso, Texas, signed a letter of intent to join the Lobos as a freshman for the 2013-14 season.
"We are very excited to have Lauren join our basketball family. She is a late signee for us in the recruiting process, and we are ecstatic to add her to our four other commitments for next season. Lauren is a great person who will continue the standard of excellence of student-athletes in our program. She will contribute and make a difference for us at the power forward position," said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez.
Newman is a six-foot one-inch forward from El Dorado High School in El Paso. She averaged 12.8 points, 12.9 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game as a senior. Newman's recruitment picked up significantly after she was ranked as the top player at the 2013 Texas JuCo Slam Jam, which included high school seniors. She showed her athleticism and energy on defense and on the boards with the ability to defend multiple positions.
Newman completes New Mexico's recruiting class for next season, which also includes Brooke Allemand, Alex Lapeyrolerie, Josie Greenwood and Kianna Keller. Allemand, Lapeyrolerie and Newman will all come to Albuquerque from the state of Texas and join fellow Texans Bryce Owens and Brea Mitchell.
Newman has an interest in studying Education and is already an active volunteer in the children's ministries at her local church.
