Sanchez's Lobos picked fourth in Mountain West preseason poll
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West Conference released its preseason poll and awards for the 2013-14 women’s basketball season, and the University of New Mexico Lobos were picked to finish fourth in the conference field of 11 teams.
“The Mountain West is a very competitive league and wide open this season. I think this poll reflects just how competitive the conference will be. While our place in the poll doesn’t come as a surprise, it doesn’t change this team’s goal. We want to compete for a conference championship,” said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez.
New Mexico did not have a player selected to the preseason all-conference team.
The MW’s preseason all-conference team is led by preseason player of the year Kayla Woodward of Wyoming. Woodward is joined by Fresno State’s Taylor Thompson, Erimma Amarkiwa of San Diego State, Colorado State’s Sam Martin and Ta’Rea Cunnigan of San Jose State. A pair of San Diego State Aztecs took home additional awards as senior Cierra Warren, a transfer from Louisville, was named Preseason Newcomer of the Year while guard Chloe Johnson was named Preseason Freshman of the Year.
New Mexico finished fourth in the Mountain West last season with a record of 17-14. Coach Sanchez and the Lobos advanced to the semifinals of the MW Tournament, which marked the seventh-straight season UNM has won at least one game in the conference tournament.
The 2013-14 edition of the New Mexico Lobos are led by seniors Sara Halasz and Deeva Vaughn. Reigning MW Sixth Player of the Year, Antiesha Brown, returns for her junior season as the Lobos return nine letterwinners from last year’s team.
The team will host a pair of exhibitions against New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico on November 2 and 5, respectively, before opening the season with Loyola Marymount on Saturday, November 3 at 3 p.m., at The Pit.
