ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico guard Antiesha Brown has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for the first weekly award of the 2013-14 season. Brown’s honor came after her career night of 28 points and eleven rebounds in the Lobos’ 69-65 victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday. The career high in points and rebounds were also Brown’s first career double-double.

Brown becomes the first Lobo to win MW Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award since Porche Torrance in January of 2012. This week’s award marks the 37th time a Lobo has earned the weekly conference award.

While Brown’s performance against the Lions was the best of her career, it also ranks among the better performances in program history. Her 28 points were the second most scored by a Lobo in a season opener. The program’s record is 32 points by Yvonne McKinnon (1981-82) and Abby Garchek (1997-98). It was also the most points scored by a Lobo since Caroline Durbin scored 29 points versus Wyoming in the 2011-12 season.

“Antiesha was an absolute beast, especially in the second half. That’s what she does and that’s why we have her on this basketball team," said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez after the game. "People will try to deny her the ball but she’s a year older and a year smarter. She’s going to find a way to score and get rebounds and steals and assists. She has an overall game."

New Mexico will take to the road for the first time this season. They’ll travel to Lubbock, Texas to face the Lady Red Raiders at 5:30 p.m. (MT) on Wednesday evening.
