ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Head coach Yvonne Sanchez and the New Mexico women’s basketball program has announced the signing of Cherise Beynon to a national letter of intent. The 5-foot-10-inch guard from Las Vegas, Nevada will join the Lobos as a freshman next season. Beynon is the second late signee for the program, joining Laneah Bryan who signed with UNM last week. Beynon and Bryan will complete New Mexico’s recruiting class that includes a trio of signees from the fall.

“We are very fortunate to add Cherise to the Lobo Family,” said head coach Yvonne Sanchez. “She had a stellar high school career and will cap it off as the school’s valedictorian.  She can play all three guard positions on the court, understands the game, knows how to win and has a terrific work ethic.  I look forward to working with Cherise for many years.”

Beynon has been a four-year varsity standout at Canyon Springs High School for head coach Dorothy Kendrick. During Beynon’s four years as a Pioneer, the varsity program posted an impressive 88-23 mark, which includes a 57-4 mark in the Northeast League of Las Vegas.  She also helped guide Canyon Springs to numerous state playoff appearances.

The wing player emerged as a junior when she averaged 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game after being named Region MVP as a sophomore. She was a second team all-state selection in 2012-13 and a first team selection last season. Beynon averaged 17.1 points, 9.5 assists and 3.1 steals as a senior, which included a 27-point outburst against Durango High in the first round of the Vegas Valley Invitational Tournament.

Beynon is the first female athlete to sign a NCAA Division I scholarship in Canyon Springs High School history. She is a two-time Las Vegas Sun Super Seven Team selection as one of the top Las Vegas metro players. The future Lobo is one of seven NCAA Division I signees from the Super Seven Teams with fellow honorees signing with Kansas and Arizona among other programs.

The 2014 recruiting class includes five future Lobos who will join nearly a dozen returners for head coach Yvonne Sanchez for the 2014-15 season.
