ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico women’s basketball head coach Yvonne Sanchez has awarded walk-on forward Alexa Chavez a scholarship for the 2014-15 season. The sophomore was an integral part of the Lobos’ playing rotation last year. Chavez, a native of Santa Fe, N.M., averaged 3.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game last season.

“Alexa has done everything we have asked of her as a walk-on these past two seasons,” said head coach Yvonne Sanchez. “After being asked to step into a bigger role last year due to injuries, she responded and played her way into our rotation. Alexa has earned a scholarship, and we are happy to reward her for all of her hard work on and off the court.”

Chavez became just the second walk-on in nearly two decades to start in New Mexico’s 75-65 win over Wyoming on Jan. 8, 2014. Her eleven points against the Cowgirls were a career high, and Alexa later recorded her first career double-double versus Boise State on Feb. 12, 2014.

The forward appeared in 26 games last season while averaging 17.0 minutes of playing time. She played twelve total minutes as a freshman in 2012-13.

Earlier this month, freshman Lauren Newman was granted a full release from her scholarship. Newman missed the entire 2013-14 season after undergoing season-ending hip surgery.

“We want to thank Lauren for her year of service in our program,” Sanchez noted. “We will support her as she pursues other playing opportunities.”
