New Mexico –1 UC Davis-2 (Match Report)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a bit of an unusual night for the New Mexico Lobos versus UC Davis (4-4-1) at the UNM Soccer Complex as New Mexico (4-3-1) dropped a 2-1 decision to the Aggies. New Mexico dominated much of the stat sheet, including shots (18-4) shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (11-2). However a converted penalty kick and an additional goal in the 74th minute gave the visitors the win.

It was an eventful opening 45 minutes of action at the UNM Soccer Complex as there was a pair of penalty kicks awarded in the first half. Ryan Goss drew a foul in the box and converted it himself for the goal in the 22nd minute.

The match saw its second penalty kick of the first half just three minutes after Goss’s conversion for UC Davis. New Mexico’s James Rogers would be taken down in the box and earned the scoring chance. Michael Calderon’s penalty kick attempt was saved by UC Davis’s by Omar Zeeni. Zeeni ‘s save on the Calderon penalty attempt was one of his three saves in the first half.

The Lobos found themselves down a goal at halftime despite an advantage in shots (8-3) and corner kicks (4-2). However, UNM tallied an equalizer less than 20 minutes into the half. New Mexico’s goal came from sophomore Ben McKendry who found the back of the net off a feed from Oniel Fisher. Fisher collected the ball and passed to McKendry in the middle of the field. The sophomore then fired a shot from five yards outside the 18-yard box for the goal.

Friday night’s match remained tied for less than eleven minutes before the visiting Aggies scored the game’s final goal. Matt Wiesenfarth got behind the defense at the near post and put away his first goal of the season for the win.

“It’s about attention to details, and we addressed that before the game. It’s a game of inches and decision making. If you look at the stat sheet, which doesn’t always dictate the outcome, we had the majority of play. We played very well. But when you miss a penalty kick and other chances right in front of the goal, you leave teams in it.” – Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

“It’s not effort. It’s not the quality of our guys. It’s not the style of play. It’s just missing a little bit.”

-Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

“This (UNM Soccer Complex) is a good environment. More power to ‘em (UC Davis). Those guys stayed the course, and they were opportunistic.” – Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

  • The UC Davis victory came in just the second all-time meeting between the two teams. New Mexico won the series opener, 2-1, back in the 2009 season.
  • Oniel Fisher’s assist on the New Mexico goal marked the first points of his Lobo career. The goal was the first of the season for Ben McKendry.
  • New Mexico is now 88-17-8 at the UNM Soccer Complex since 2002.
