Calderon Earns Third National Team of the Week Honor

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico midfielder Michael Calderon has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for a second time this season. Calderon recorded an assist on both of New Mexico’s goals in the 2-0 victory over Penn State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening.  The award marks the third time this season the Costa Rican has received national weekly honors.

The senior midfielder first lobbed a pass from the top of the box to Oniel Fisher for the Lobos’ first goal in the 53rd minute. He triggered the scoring action on New Mexico’s goal four minutes later off a pinpoint corner kick.

Calderon was a First Team All-Conference USA selection this season with six goals and five assists this season. He now has ten goals with 13 assists in two seasons with the Lobos. The senior now has one goal and five assists in New Mexico’s last four NCAA Tournament matches. Calderon scored once and recorded two assists in UNM’s 3-1 win over Virginia in last season’s tournament before recording the assist on Devon Sandoval’s goal against UConn in the 2012 Sweet 16.

The Lobos, who were one of three programs in the nation to advance to a third-straight Sweet 16, will travel to the University of Washington for the Elite Eight. The Lobos will face the Huskies on Saturday, December 7at 6 p.m. (MST) in Seattle.
