KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Five members of the New Mexico men’s soccer program have been selected to the 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's All-Midwest Region team. Seniors Michael Calderon and Kyle Venter were both First Team All-Region selections while Michael Kafari, Mathew Gibbons and Ben McKendry were All-Region Third Team members. New Mexico was the only school to have five selections to the All-Midwest Region teams.
The quintet of Lobos on this year’s Midwest region teams ties the program record for most all-region selections in a year. The 2004 and 2007 Lobos also had five players elected to the NSCAA’s all-region teams. The 2013 selections give the UNM program 43 regional award winners since 1993 and 30 selections since the 2004 season.
The five Lobos on this year’s all-region team was part of a 23-member contingency of Conference USA players represented on NSCAA All-Region Teams. Coach Fishbein and the Lobos also led C-USA in award winners as well.
This year’s award is the first for Gibbons, Kafari and McKendry while Venter and Calderon were both selected to all-region teams last season. Venter becomes the fourth Lobo ever to receive NSCAA All-Region honors in three seasons joining Justin Sells, Lance Watson and Brandon Moss.
The 2013 Lobos have advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the second time in program history. The Conference USA regular season champions became one of only three programs in the nation to advance to three-straight Sweet 16’s en route to their Final Four appearance.
New Mexico will face Notre Dame on Friday, December 13 at 3 p.m. (MST) in the first match of this year’s College Cup. The Lobos and Irish will play on ESPNU and on the radio locally on 101.7 FM The Team.
