ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Former Lobo Soccer standout Michael Kafari made his professional debut for Sporting KC of the MLS in an exhibition versus Manchester City, the reigning English Primer League champions. Kafari stepped on the pitch for his MLS club just two weeks after signing his professional contract. The Ghanaian midfielder entered the match at halftime for Benny Feilhaber in Man City’s 4-1 victory in Kansas City and recorded one shot that was saved by Man City’s Willy Caballero.

“It was crazy going out on the field in my first professional game and having it be against the reigning EPL champions,” Kafari noted. “Once I got out there, I was really impressed by the crowds. My time out there happened so fast that it wasn’t until I came off the field that I realized I had just gone against Manchester City.”

His signing with Sporting KC made him the third Lobo of the 2013 senior class to sign a MLS contract with Kyle Venter (LA Galaxy) and Michael Lisch (Houston Dynamo) being the other two.

“I’m relieved,” said Kafari at the time of his signing. “It’s been a long six months (since the draft). I’m happy to sign with Kansas City because I came (to Kansas City) before my senior season and trained for a week and really enjoyed myself. With (U.S. Men’s National Team players) Graham Zusi and Matt Besler it’s a great team. They won the MLS Cup last year and I look forward to playing with them.”

A native of Ghana, Kafari appeared in 82 games, including 61 starts, in four years primarily as a defensive midfielder for the Lobos, and he played over 6,500 minutes for Fishbein. He was named Second Team All-MPSF as a junior, and as a senior he was a third team selection for the NSCAA’s All-Midwest Region team as well as Conference USA’s All-Conference team. He helped guide the Lobos to four straight NCAA Tournament berths and three straight Sweet Sixteens.

NOTE: Kyle Venter also made his debut for the LA Galaxy on Wednesday evening and logged six minutes against Manchester United before suffering an injury.
