ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's soccer team is entering the 2014 season with lofty expectations. The team is returning seven starters from a group that advanced to the College Cup in 2013 and added a MAC Hermann Watch List honoree in Kevin Correa. They are one of just three programs to earn a top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons, and they are also one of just three programs to advance to the Sweet Sixteen the last three years.
It's no surprise, then, that the preseason rankings reflect those lofty expectations. The Lobos earned their third top-15 ranking of the preseason Monday, when TopDrawerSoccer ranked them 13th in its inital top 25. The Lobos were previously ranked fifth by the NSCAA and seventh by College Soccer News.
UNM, which just concluded its preseason exhibitions on Saturday, opens this season this Friday at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex against the No. 13 Akron Zips.
