KANSAS CITY, Kan. – University of New Mexico senior defender Kyle Venter has been named to the 2013 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Venter is one of only 65 men’s soccer players in the nation to be named to the list. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award given in college soccer.
The Aurora, Colorado native’s résumé for the award speaks for itself. The center back was an All-American as a sophomore and a junior. Over the summer, he was also named a Preseason All-American and Preseason Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. His off-the-field accolades are just as impressive as he is a NSCAA Scholar All-American and an Academic All-Conference student-athlete.
Venter’s naming to the watch list marks the second-straight season a Lobo has been named to the prestigious list. UNM alum, now with Real Salt Lake of the MLS, Devon Sandoval was on the watch list last season.
Lobo Soccer’s history with the award is rich. Three different Lobos have been a semifinalist or finalist for this award. Jeff Rowland was a finalist in 2005, and Andrew Boyens was a semifinalist the following season. Devon Sandoval was a semifinalist in 2012.
Venter and the rest of the Lobos have two remaining exhibitions at Air Force and at Denver this week. New Mexico’s 2013 season will officially begin on Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m. when Villanova pays a visit to the UNM Soccer Complex.
