#9 New Mexico –1  #11 Georgetown-0 (Double Overtime)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The ninth-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos wanted to avoid a second draw in a row in their primetime match-up at eleventh-ranked Georgetown. It was freshman Nicholas Rochowksi who waited for the bright lights of double overtime to deliver his first career goal and gave UNM the double-overtime victory.

The match began with defensive-minded play as the first 45 minutes saw only one shot on goal. The only real scoring threat came just two minutes in for the Lobos. The New Mexico attack yielded a quality chance for freshman Christopher Wehan who blasted a shot from the edge of the box that forced a save from Tomas Gomez.

The Lobo attack really began to assert themselves in the final ten minutes of regulation as they earned numerous corners and took several shots. New Mexico fired off five shots in the final five minutes but was unable to find the back of the net. The two teams entered overtime with a 10-7 UNM shot advantage, and UNM led by five in corner kicks.

Neither side capitalized on any chances in the first overtime as New Mexico outshot the Hoyas 2-0. James Rogers nearly had a game-winner in the box off a deep run from Mathew Gibbons, but the junior forward missed high.

New Mexico would finally kick the door down after knocking on it in the attack for over 100 minutes. A Michael Calderon-James Rogers combination placed Rogers on the left side of the box with a full head of steam. Rogers’ shot was saved by Georgetown’s Thomas Gomez, but Rochowski found the rebound and sent home the golden goal.
