New Mexico –3 Marshall-1 (Match Report)

HUNTINGTON, W.V.  – The New Mexico Lobos (5-3-1) were looking to continue their road success this season as they opened Conference USA play on the road at Marshall University (2-5-1). New Mexico’s 3-1 win in West Virginia came in the program’s first-ever Conference USA match as the Lobos remained undefeated on the road (3-0-1) in 2013.

The Lobos were the first team on the scoreboard on Monday evening as Ben McKendry scored for New Mexico in the 22nd minute off a pass from Niko Hansen. It was McKendry’s second goal of the season and his second in as many games.

New Mexico tacked on a second goal just nine minutes later when Hansen would again set up a teammate for the score. Hansen recorded his second assist of the match as he fed Michael Calderon for the Lobos’ second score. The goal was Calderon’s fourth of the season.

UNM’s two-goal lead lasted only a handful of minutes before Marshall was awarded a penalty kick. Zach Hunter put the Thundering Herd within one goal with ten minutes to go in the half. Yet neither side would score again in the first half.

As was the case in the first half, Coach Fishbein and company were the first team to score in the second half. Riley McGovern pushed the Lobo attack down the right side of the field and sent a cross deep into the box where Niko Hansen one-touched it for the goal. The score was Hansen’s fifth of the season.

The Lobos picked up the 3-1 win despite not having their usual massive shot advantage. The shots were tied at ten apiece after 90 minutes (Marshall led 8-5 in first half). However, New Mexico was pinpoint in their accuracy with eight of their ten shots being on goal. Only three of Marshall’s ten shots were on goal.

“I thought we played really well tonight. It was a challenging environment on the road that included a big, all-turf field. We made the game a little more exciting than it needed to be, but I thought our reaction to the penalty kick call was good. There was no shift in focus from the guys.” – Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

“Ben had a nice goal, and it was good to see him score in two matches in a row. It was important for Calderon and Hansen to get on the board as well.  Those goals were good for our whole team’s confidence. We are already excited to play again Friday night in front of our home crowd.” – Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

  • New Mexico entered Monday undefeated on the road with a mark of 2-0-1. Tonight’s win at Marshall is UNM’s third road win in four matches (Georgetown and UC Santa Barbara as well).
  • Coach Fishbein and company’s two goals in the first half marked the team’s first multi-goal first half since their 7-2 win over Villanova in the season opener.
  • With five goals in his first nine collegiate matches, Niko Hansen is already tied for fourth all-time in the freshman scoring record books with five goals. Ben McKendry is currently third in that category with the seven goals he had last season.
