ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program is rounding out the 2013 regular season with Senior Day versus Kentucky on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. The Lobos will honor a quartet of seniors; Michael Lisch, Michael Calderon, Michael Kafari and Kyle Venter. New Mexico will also be looking to continue to make noise in their first season in Conference USA.

Coach Fishbein and the Lobos enter Saturday with a record of 10-4-2 (6-1-1 C-USA) and fighting to earn a first-round bye in the Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte next week.  The Cherry & Silver have been quite good at home (3-0-1) against conference foes, many of which have been making their first trip ever to Albuquerque. The Kentucky Wildcats are in the same boat and are facing the Lobos for the first time ever.

In addition to honoring their four seniors, the team will also be wearing special uniforms for the match in honor of Native American Heritage Month. It’s all part of what figures to be a great home atmosphere on Saturday night in the UNM Soccer Complex.

New Mexico will be wearing special turquoise uniforms for the match in honor of Native American Heritage Month. The program has built a special relationship with the state’s Native American population. The team regularly performs soccer clinics for youths from nearby Native American reservations and pueblos.

While not all of this year’s senior class spent all four years with New Mexico, some members have been a part of some of the best years of Lobo Soccer. This year’s senior class has 54 wins going into Saturday with NCAA Tournament appearances in all three seasons so far in Albuquerque. Those three trips to the “big dance” include back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2011 and 2012.

With the win last Saturday at #24 Old Dominion, New Mexico has its third-straight season of ten or more wins. The Lobos have had at least ten wins in eight of its last nine seasons. In the Jeremy Fishbein era (2002 – present), the Lobos are averaging over 13 wins per season.

Michael Calderon was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week. Calderon earned the honor after converting penalty kicks in each of New Mexico’s wins last week; over No.10 UAB and No.24 Old Dominion. The honor marks the second time Calderon has received the national honor. He was on TopDrawerSoccer’s National Team of the Week after scoring two goals and tallying an assist in New Mexico’s 7-2 victory over Villanova in their season opener.

James Rogers and Kyle Venter were named to the Capital One Academic All-District team.  The award, voted on by sports information directors across the region, is given to student-athletes who exemplify excellence on and off the field. Student-athletes must have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average and participation in at least half of their team's matches.

The pair marks the tenth time in the last eleven seasons that the program has yielded multiple award winners. Since the 2003 season, Coach Fishbein and the Lobos have received academic all-district honors on 41 separate occasions. Rogers and Venter will now be eligible to receive Capital One’s Academic All-America honors.
