ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After being named Conference USA Freshman of the Year, New Mexico midfielder Christopher Wehan has received national recognition as a freshman. Wehan was selected to College Soccer News’ 2013 All-Freshman Third Team. His inclusion on the Freshman All-American team marks the second-straight year a Lobo has earned the honor. Teammate Ben McKendry was a Second Team All-Freshman selection last season.
Wehan had a memorable first season on the pitch for Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein and the Lobos. The midfielder was a catalyst for the Lobo attack all season long. He was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman First Team in addition to his Conference USA Freshman of the Year award. The Southern California native finished the year with three goals and one assist.
The midfielder found his form midway through the season when he tallied his first career goals in back-to-back matches against Florida International and Florida Atlantic at the UNM Soccer Complex.
The redshirt freshman was part of the team’s historic 2013 season. Coach Fishbein and the Lobos were the Conference USA regular season champions as they made their way to the program’s second-ever NCAA College Cup appearance. New Mexico became one of only three programs in the nation to advance to a third consecutive Sweet 16 en route to the Final Four appearance.
