ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The fifth-ranked University of New Mexico men's soccer team closed out its exhibition season with a 1-1 draw with visiting Denver University Saturday night in front of 1,506 fans at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Freshman Sam Gleadle opened the scoring with his second goal of the exhibition season. He corralled a rebound off a Ben McKendry shot and slid it past the keeper in the 30th minute.
Denver tied the game just before half, though, when Reid Hukari found Cole Stevenson in the box. Stevenson poked it past Patrick Poblete to even the score.
The Lobos had the majority of the chances after that, outshooting the Pioneers 18-6.
In the 80th minute Kevin Correa sent in a cross from the near side, but the ball was just slightly out of reach of Niko Hansen who was alone in the box.
UNM then recorded five of the six shots in the two overtime periods, but the Lobos couldn't put home the deciding goal. The best chances for either side in the final overtime came when DU's keeper misplayed a cross and the ball was sitting in the box. He managed to recover in time, however, and covered it just before James Rogers could knock it into the net.

"There were a lot of positives. We're going to see this a lot this season. We're going to see a lot of the ball, teams are going to defend against us with a lot of numbers, and their chances are going to come off the counter or on set pieces. We just have to have quality." - Coach Jeremy FIshbein on the style the Pioneers played.
"For us its about being disciplined, being a mature team, being patient, and not giving lesser teams openings. They didn't have too many chances, and we had a lot. We had the ball in good areas. Executing in the final third is an area we still have to get better at. I think we're going to take a couple days and get our legs back under us. We're going to focus on our opener this Friday against Akron, and I think you're going to see a really hungry, refreshed and dynamic team Friday night." - Coach Fishbein on what the Lobos need to work on in the next week before the opener against Akron
"The number one thing we have to do is move forward. We learned a lot about ourselves these last three games. I think we know our strengths and weaknesses and how to build on that. It's going to be a long week getting ready for Akron, but I have no doubt we're going to be ready." - Sophomore Chris Wehan
The Lobos open the regular season with a huge match against No. 13 Akron on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex.
