Box Score

It's supposed to be Lobos Senior Day on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex and maybe it will be.

But Friday night on Lobo grass, it was Sophomores Day as three New Mexico sophomores were key figures in the scoring column that handed the Lobos a 3-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win over Seattle.

Sophomore Josh Caffey got the game-winner at the 37:23 mark of the first half.
Sophomore Travis Campbell got an insurance goal at the 68:22 mark of the second half.
Sophomore Blake Smith got the assist on Campbell's goal.

Naturally, a team's first goal and any game-winner is a pivotal shot. But you can bet that when Campbell pounded in his shot off Smith's assist that Lobo coach Jeremy Fishbein breathed a sigh of relief.

Fishbein has been preaching to his Lobos all season the importance of a second goal -- an insurance goal -- in order to form a comfort zone between UNM and the opposition. Sure, 1-0 is nice, but the other team is one mistake or one lucky strike away from a 1-1 tie. You go up 2-0 and you have some room for error.

The Lobos really didn't need any room for error against Seattle, but this game was closer than the scored indicated. It was a hard-fought battle with UNM taking 12 shots to nine for Seattle. UNM put seven shots on goal and Seattle was on-net with four shots.

Another thing a soccer coach likes to see is for a player to make the most of his opportunities when they come. Caffey was 1-for-1. Caffey took one shot and hit net. Ditto for Campbell.

If the standing in the Pacific Division of the MPSF are any indication of toughness, than it only gets tougher for the Lobos at 1 p.m. Sunday when Cal State Bakersfield visits UNM. Seattle was in last place in the Pacific pack. Bakersfield is running away with that division.

The win over Seattle pushes UNM's mark to 7-4-2 overall and 4-2 in league play. The five Lobo seniors to be recognized on Sunday are Michael Reed, David Murphy, Matt Armstrong, Ryan Farquharson and James Urbany.
