ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- Junior midfielder Blake Smith tripled his season goal total this past weekend, helping fuel the New Mexico Lobos to two wins and their 9-0-2/3-0-0 record heading into week eight.
Smith scored the Lobos’ first goal against Denver on Friday in the eventual 3-2 win, and scored both goals in Sunday’s bout against Air Force, including the game-winner with 44 seconds left on the clock.
Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News both took notice of Smith’s performances this past week and have named him to their respective teams of the week. Additionally, Smith garnered his first conference award of the year, being named the MPSF Player of the Week for week seven.
Smith is the third Lobo to earn Player of the Week honors, and this week marks the second consecutive week that New Mexico has snagged the award. Junior Devon Sandoval earned the honor in week four, while Kyle Venter took the award last week.
This season, Smith has six goals to tie Sandoval as the team’s leading scorer. With two assists to his credit, his 14 points ranks second behind Sandoval. He’s taken 27 shots this season, putting 15 of them on goal for a .556 shot on goal percentage. His second goal on Sunday against the Falcon’s was his first game-winner of the season.
The Lobos, ranked third in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and fifth by College Soccer News also had four players named to Top Drawer’s conference Top 20 list this week. Senior Lance Rozeboom earned the No. 2 spot, while Sandoval captured No. 6. Freshman James Rogers sits tight at No. 10 while Lobo goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez holds the No. 19 hole.
New Mexico will host Denver and Air Force at home this weekend, with Friday night’s game against the Pioneers being the “Think Pink” double-header affair with the women’s team. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
