ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--University of New Mexico head men's soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein has announced the 2009 Lobo schedule today. The Lobos will take on the nations best and start their quest for another Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth. Standing in their way is one of the toughest schedules the Lobos have faced in school history. New Mexico will take on nine 2008 NCAA Tournament teams and will see six of them in their first seven matches.

"We want to play the best," said Fishbein. "When we recruit student-athletes to attend New Mexico, their goal is to come and play for one of the top programs in the country and to reach their full potential as players. The only way to do this is to play against top competition. Our players and coaching staff are excited to test ourselves against the nations elite. Our home matches are going to be a great experience for all our local supporters and will provide a valuable learning tool for New Mexico youth players."

The 2009 season includes nine home matches against top-tier competition.

The Lobos start the exhibition season off on the road against 2008 NCAA tournament second round participant, Tulsa on Aug. 21 then take on Oral Roberts on Aug. 23. The University of Southern Colorado will make the trip down to Albuquerque on Aug. 27 to conclude the exhibition portion of the Lobos schedule.

In New Mexico's first seven matches, six will be against teams that made the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos start on the road against 2008 NCAA Tournament second round participant, St. Louis University on Sept. 1. On Sept. 5 the Lobos host West Coast Conference Champion and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant, the University of San Francisco.

New Mexico will play its first of three tournaments on the road as they take on Big-10 runner up and 2008 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight participant, Indiana on Sept. 11 and 2008 NCAA Tournament second round participant, Notre Dame on Sept. 13 in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament hosted by Notre Dame. The Lobos will then host the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational and will take on 2008 NCAA Tournament second round participant, UC-Davis on Sept. 18 and Gonzaga on Sept. 20. A trip to sunny California will be the Lobos next tournament destination as they travel to Stanford for the Stanford Nike Classic to take on 2008 NCAA Tournament second round participant Cal-Berkeley on Sept. 25 and host Stanford on Sept. 27.

The month of Oct. will kick off with two home matches as the Lobos host Cal-State Northridge on Oct. 3 and 2008 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 participant, UC-Irvine on Oct.7 to round out the Lobos non-conference schedule.

MPSF play begins with two home matches against league newcomers Seattle University on Oct. 16 and Cal-State Bakersfield on Oct. 18. The Lobos then hit the road for four consecutive road matches against Air Force on Oct. 23, 2008 MPSF Conference Champion and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant, Denver on Oct. 25, Sacramento State on Oct. 30 and San Jose State on Nov. 1.

The Lobos return to Albuquerque and conclude regular season play against UNLV on Nov. 7.
