WILMINGTON, Del. - University of New Mexico senior golfer James Erkenbeck halved his singles match with Team Europe's Joel Stalter after winning a four-ball pairing with teammate Daniel Berger as Team USA took an 11.5-3.5 lead after two rounds of the Palmer Cup on Saturday.

Erkenbeck's team win was worth one point and his halved singles match gave Team USA another 0.5 points.

Erkenbeck went 1-up after four holes, but back-to-back wins by Stalter, a University of California player last season, at the turn moved the advantage to Europe's favor. Erkenbeck regained the lead with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 11-12 and pushed the lead to 2-up with an eagle at No. 14. A Stalter birdie at the 15th cut the lead to one, but Erkenbeck responded by winning No. 16 with a birdie of his own. Stalter claimed the last two holes to halve the match.

Erkenbeck combined with Florida State's Daniel Berger for Team USA to defeat Team Europe's Scott Fernandez (Iowa State) and Pedro Figuieredo (UCLA) 4 and 3 during a morning match that had been pushed back a day.

The Americans birdied Nos. 3 and 4 to take a 2-up lead and pushed their advantage to 5-up with three-straight birdies from Nos. 9-11.

Erkenbeck will take part in the final foursome pairing with California's Michael Kim today in their match against Team Europe's Fernandez and Ben Taylor (Nova Southeastern University).
