Student Assistant

Former Lobo Robert Gonzales is in his second year on the UNM staff, serving as a student assistant.

Prior to his addition to the Lobo coaching staff, Gonzales spent three years coaching high school ball as an assistant to former Lobo Paul Huitt at Sandia Prep in Albuquerque. After finishing his two-year career at UNM in 1998, Gonzales played for the Bayou Bull Frogs of the Texas/Louisiana League in 1999.

While at UNM, Gonzales set a school record with 68 career doubles, and he has the top two single-season double totals (35 in '98, 33 in '97) in school history. He also became the second player in NCAA history to lead the nation in doubles per game in consecutive seasons. He led the nation in total doubles (33) as a junior in 1997. Gonzales was a .397 career hitter, second-best in school history, and his 106 hits in 1997 were also second best. He also had a 22-game hitting streak as a senior, currently the third-longest in school annals at the time.

Gonzales, 26, is a 1994 graduate of Goddard HS in Roswell, N.M. He is currently pursuing his degree in Elementary Education and is on pace to finish in 2003.
