Dave Binder is in his 16th year as UNM"s Head Athletics Trainer.
Over the last 16 years, Binder's graduates have been hired by, UNM (2), Los Angeles Dodgers (2), Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Washington Nationals, Arizona Cardinals, NFL Europe (2),New Mexico Scorpions, NBDL, Everett Washington Silvertips(Hockey), Notre Dame, Rice University, Texas A&M, University of Texas, UTEP, Arizona State, Oregon State (2), Cal-Northridge, University of Nebraska, University of Wyoming, Mesa State, Ferrum College, UCLA, Southern Illinois University, St. Mary, Incarnete Word, Western Illinois, Mount Olive, MacArthur University and University of Tennessee, and high schools in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. During the past 16 years as the Head Athletic Trainer at UNM his student trainers have served as interns for the following NFL Teams; Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, and The Dallas Cowboys.
Binder served seven years on the New Mexico Athletic Practice Board as appointed by Gov. Bill Richardson in 2003. He has served for two years as its Chairman. The board oversees and regulates the practice of athletic training throughout the state.
Binder has 40 years in the field of athletic training, including 13 years as head trainer at UTEP. A native of Big Spring, Texas,Binder received both his Bachelor's degree (1973) and Master's degree (1975) from UTEP.
During his tenure at UTEP, Binder was recognized with one of the school's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award as well as being selected as a Diamond Gem during UTEP's 75th Anniversary. He is a member of the UTEP Sports Hall of Fame and was elected to the El Paso Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
Binder and his staff were recognized as the Mountain West Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year in 2009.
In 2008, Binder was selected as one of only three university trainers in the United States to be part of the NFL Combine.
In 2006, Binder was recognized as an Honorary Letterman by UNM.
Binder was awarded the Everett Blackburn award in 2003 for his unselfish devotion to athletic training.
Binder and his wife of 35 years, Michele, have two children, Jennifer (Ms. Christopher Perez) and Kyle. Both are graduates of UNM.
