ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico ski team is hosting a Reunion Hike up La Luz on Saturday, September 28. All Lobo skiing alumni, fans and friends of the program are invited to participate.
The day will begin at 10 a.m., with a brunch at Frontier before beginning the trek up La Luz in the early afternoon. The hike will start at the base of the Tram and should take three to four hours to complete.
Upon completion, dinner will be held at the top of the Sandias and then the group will take the Sandia Peak Tram back down, possibly in time to make it to the Lobo Football game against UNLV that begins at 6 p.m.
New Mexico head coach Fredrik Landsted says the tradition of hiking La Luz dates back 40 years as Lobo skiers have frequented the trail on weekends as part of team training in the fall.
"Everyone remembers hiking La Luz in the late August heat, in late fall and seeing the changing of the leaves, and eventually hiking through snow before reaching the tram," Landsted said. "Klaus Weber, who was my coach when I came to UNM from Sweden, loved the La Luz hike and I remember hiking it pretty much every Saturday at 8 a.m. in the fall. Sometimes it was pretty tough as a student to get up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning to go hiking."
Landsted hopes the event will also be a chance for those who have and are currently involved with the program to bond.
"The UNM ski team depends on the support of its alumni and fans in order to stay competitive with the best teams in the country," head coach Fredrik Landsted said. "This is a great opportunity for alumni and supporters of the UNM ski team to get together, share stories and memories, and to remember all the tough hikes up the mountain they did as student-athletes."
