Triendl, Resaland Named First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. --- Of all the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America teams, making it to the first team for the at-large sports category might very well be the toughest team to make.  Despite being the best academically, that specific team factors in every student-athlete in the men’s sports of Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo and Wrestling.

Getting one first teamer would be quite the feat, which makes the University of New Mexico’s tandem of alpine skier Armin Triendl and Nordic skier Mats Resaland quite the duo.  Triendl and Resaland both were named First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America on Thursday, giving UNM Athletics its third and fourth Academic All-Americans for the year, and making UNM one of only two schools with a pair of first team selections on the men’s at-large squad.

Triendl and Resaland join Alabama golfers Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt as the only teammates from the same school, let alone the same sport, to make the first team.  Overall, there were 15 student-athletes on the first team.  Twelve of those student-athletes came from one of the five power conferences or Notre Dame.  Only UNM’s tandem and Grand Canyon’s Ivan Nechunaev were not from one of the five power conferences.

Armin Triendl, a senior from Oberperfuss, Austria, has a 4.10 GPA and is majoring in finance.  He was a 2012 Capital One/CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America, but he missed the entire 2013 season with a knee injury.  He bounced back from that to finish second in the NCAAs in the slalom, earning First Team All-America honors.

A native of Kongsberg, Norway, Resaland has a 4.04 G.P.A. and is majoring in business administration. He finished third at the NCAA Championships in the Nordic freestyle, earning the third All-America honor of his career, while helping the Lobos to a third-place team finish this year.

Hailing from Oberperfuss, Austria, Triendl is a senior with a 4.10 G.P.A. in finance.  He bounced back from a knee injury that forced him to sit out the 2012-13 season to place second at the NCAA Championships in 2014 in the slalom. The second-place finish earned him first team All-America honors.  He also helped the Lobos place third in at the nationals competition this season.

The school record for one academic year is five, and UNM has a shot to tie or break that record on June 26 when the final Capital One/CoSIDA All-America teams are announced for the sports of track and field/cross country.  UNM has four student-athletes up for Academic All-America honors in those sports.  UNM has now had at least four Academic All-Americans in each of the last four years.

UNM did set a school record with 17 Academic All-District selections, one more than the 16 that UNM garnered last year.  The 33 over a two-year period is easily the most fertile two-year span in the school’s history.

NOTES:  Triendl and Resaland gave UNM its first First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America picks since Kelly Williamson (volleyball) and Caroline Durbin (women’s basketball) were honored in 2011-12, and they are the first male student-athletes to earn First Team honors since Tor-Hakon Hellebostad (skiing) and Travis Ross (men’s golf) in 2010-11 … the four Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America picks ties for the second-most in school history.  Last year UNM had five honorees (no first team picks) and the school had four in 2011-12 and 2010-11.
