Chris Acosta finished second on the men's side while sophomore Mateja Robnik claimed third on the women's side of Sunday's slalom event to lift the Lobos to a fourth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association/NCAA West Regionals invitational hosted by Montana State in Bozeman, Mont.
New Mexico sat in last place after Friday's opening events and improved one place in the standings each day of competition to finish fourth with 755 points.
Colorado won the Championships/Regionals with a score of 905.5. Denver followed with 859 points and Utah finished in third place with 805. Montana State (738.5) and Alaska-Anchorage (620) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
After winning yesterday's giant slalom race, Acosta just barely missed out on a weekend sweep as he was two-tenth's of a second (0.20) behind Denver's Espen Lysdahl who won Sunday's slalom race with a time of 1:50.37. Acosta, a native of Ashland, Wisc., recorded a 1:50.57 and finished runner-up. It's his fifth top-five finish in 2013.
Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women and earned her second third-place finish in as many days. Robnik's two runs for the slalom totaled 1:38.75.
The women's team finished second in the slalom by one point, recording 111 to Denver's 112.
Following Robnik were seniors Kate Williams and March Rachel Hostetter. Williams was fifth with a total time of 1:39.93 and Hostetter was 12th with a time of 1:41.28.
Overall, the Lobo Alpine team finished second to Denver in downhill events, recording 441 points to the Pioneers' 478.
Freshman Courtney Altringer placed 15th on the women's side.
Up next for the New Mexico ski team is the 2013 NCAA National Championships, March 6-9, in Middlebury, Vt.
