University of New Mexico Soccer… just when you think you have things figured out, you get bit on the rear end. It was a rough trip to Columbia, South Carolina and the "Graveyard". After a five game unbeaten streak to open Conference USA play, the zero has been removed from the loss column. The task at hand, is to look forward, focus on the next game and get the job done!
LOBOS vs. #10 UAB TOMORROW NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) 7:00 PM at the Lobo Soccer Complex
LOBOS VS. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA: SATURDAY OCTOBER 26TH 7:00 PM COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA
Saturday’s match versus South Carolina was our first trip to the "Graveyard”, the infamous home of South Carolina Gamecock Soccer. Situated right next to an on-campus cemetery, the "Graveyard" is a beautiful stadium with plenty of history and wonderful aesthetics. We all were excited for this trip and our preparation, energy and focus were "spot on".
We opened the game well and had the better of the first half. USC played very defensively and challenged us to break down their organized and compact back eight. We possessed the ball, played in the attacking half and never felt pressured for the first 45 minutes.
The second half was even more Lobos. We outshot USC 11-3, dominated possession and chances, hit the post/crossbar three times, but couldn't manage to find the net. Reminiscent of some matches early season. For the game, we out-shot the Gamecocks 14-8 (very generous from their scorekeeper), 10-3 in corners, our GK never tested but credited with two saves…..70 seconds into overtime, a bad mistake in back, great finish and we go down in flames 0-1 to a team who never threatened. Incredible dose of reality….you have to score goals to win. The longer you let a lesser team stay in the game, anything can happen……..GUTTED! We played some wonderful and skillful soccer and were a joy to watch. I am confident the boys will rebound, and we have a great opportunity to put this one behind us tomorrow night at 7:00 here on our home turf.
Wednesday night’s match against University of Alabama at Birmingham will be an exciting one! Two teams who want the ball, two skillful attacking teams, two teams fighting for a conference title….need to see everyone in the stands at 7:00 PM.
