ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico senior defender Kyle Venter has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after his goal on Senior Day and stellar play in the backline. Venter scored his first goal of the season off a Michael Calderon corner kick in the 62nd minute of New Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Kentucky on Senior Day last Saturday. Venter and the rest of the New Mexico defense recorded their eighth shutout of the season with the victory over the Wildcats.

Venter’s award marks the third time a Lobo has received National Team of the Week honors this season. Michael Calderon earned the national award on two separate occasions earlier this season with the most recent being last week.

The weekly honor from the national media isn’t a something new for Venter. This most recent accolade marks the third straight season that Venter has received a national weekly honor. He is also a two-time All-American who is approaching the program’s all-time record for minutes played in a career.

The New Mexico Lobos are off to the Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte as the top seed. They’ve earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of Tulsa and South Carolina who are the fourth and fifth seeded teams in the tournament. The Lobos will face either the Golden Hurricane or the Gamecocks on Friday, November 15 at 3 p.m. (MST) on the campus of the University of North Carolina – Charlotte.
