Spirit Program volunteers at Relay for Life Albuquerque

The University of New Mexico Spirit Program spent their Friday night volunteering at the Relay for Life Albuquerque held on June 19 at the Balloon Fiesta Park. The cheerleaders, dancers and mascots helped with the purse auction, puppet making, parking, decorating tents and cheering on participants as they made their many laps to raise money for the fight against cancer. The event proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

National Cancer Survivor's Day

The UNM Cheerleaders and Chaparrals volunteered on Saturday, June 13th at the National Cancer Survivor's Day. It is a day of educational sessions and celebration. During the mid-day celebration, the UNM Spirit Program painted faces of young children. The event was hosted at Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque.

UNM Athletes visit the Boys & Girls Club

Members of the University of New Mexico Women's Basketball, Football and Volleyball teams volunteered at a Summer Presentation at the Boys & Girls Club of Albuquerque. The event was held on Friday, June 12, 2009 and the athletes spoke to the kids about staying healthy and active. After a quick talk, the kids participated with the UNM Athletes by playing basketball, football and volleyball.

Children's Safety Fair

Members of the UNM Spirit Program volunteered at a table at the Children's Safety Fair hosted by Del Norte Baptist Church. The event was held on Saturday, June 6th with many other tables to help promote child safety including bicycle & fire safety. The UNM Cheerleaders and Chaparrals talked to kids about getting involved with UNM athletics and gave out coloring pages of Lobo Louie and Lucy.

UNM Student-Athletes Visit Local Boys & Girls Club

Several Lobo student-athletes spoke to the kids at the Boys & Girls Club in northeast Albuquerque on June 12.

Members of the UNM Chaparral Dance Team went to career week at Mountain View Elementary School. They spoke with First Graders about staying in school and going to college. They discussed different career choices and the importance of setting goals early.

Lobo Baseball, Basketball and Spirit Squad Visit Monte Vista Elementary School

Sept. 24, 2008

The Lobo men's golf team hosted the William H. Tucker Pairings Party Tuesday night, Sept. 23. The American Cancer Society puts on Camp Enchantment for young people diagnosed with cancer. The event has raised over $10,000 so far this week with more being raised Thursday at the College-Am. The Lobos were present and served as greeters, spotters for the auction, and volunteers for the party. This is all a part of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate golf tournament held at the UNM Championship Course each year.


Sept. 24, 2008

The UNM Spirit Program volunteered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's annual "Light the Night" event on September 20, 2008. The spirit program members helped paint faces and welcome guests to the event. The "Light the Night" event is an evening walk to help raise awareness and funds to fight blood cancers.


Sept. 14, 2008

The UNM Spirit Program volunteered with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Fight Back Express on Sunday, September 14th at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. They helped to guide people to the location and passed out the pens and lavender to the cancer survivors, caregivers and friends signing the bus. The UNM Cheerleaders were also able to sign the ACS CAN Bus that will travel across the country, stopping in hundreds of communities to build the movement to make cancer issues a national priority. ACS CAN will bring the stories of cancer patients, survivors and friends to the presidential candidates to make cancer a priority issue in their administration.
