Lobo Baseball Field
Lobo Field was UNM's home field for over 35 years, and is now the team's primary practice facility. However, that will be changing with the announcement of a major renovation to Lobo Baseball Field. The plans are to move from Isotopes Park back to Lobo Baseball Field in time for the 2012 season. Renovations will begin in June of 2011, and they will include lowering the playing field, permanent bleachers, overflow berms along the first and third base lines, concessions, locker rooms, and most drastically, altering the playing field by rotating it 90 degrees clockwise.
Under coach Ray Birmingham, the team has had a resurgence, capped by the team's first postseason NCAA berth since 1962. Renewed interest in the program from fans and alumni have allowed for he team to make plans to return to their former on-campus home. The Lobos have called Isotopes Park their home since 2003, and the move back to campus will allow the Lobos to potentially host conference and NCAA tournaments. Seating capacity will be 1,500, with room for potentially double that total.
The renovations are the first major ones to the facility, and golobos.com will have artists renderings available soon. The Lobo Baseball Field has seen two minor renovations in the last 20 years. In 1998, a new addition to Lobo Field was an indoor batting cage, the Ambrose Alday Batting Complex. Complete with heat, lights and video monitors, the facility consists of three cages, is carpeted and is equipped with pitching machines. In 1999, a new aluminum fence was installed, giving the field a sparkling new look and providing an excellent hitting background. In 2004, the infield was fitted with SS Turf.
