M. Basketball. STEVENS: Lobos Roll Nicholls State 83-59; Meet La. Tech Saturday

The unofficial championship of the World Vision Classic hits The Pit floor at 8:34 p.m. Saturday when the undefeated Lobos try to muscle up with the undefeated Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The two teams powered their way to victory Friday with the Lobos rolling Nicholls State 83-59 behind 18 points from Phillip McDonald and Tech pounded Miami (Ohio) 74-62 behind 27 points from senior Kyle Gibson. The Bulldogs never trailed against Miami while the Lobos had to shake off an early 11-9 deficit before beating down the Colonels with a combination of pressure defense and solid transition offense.

Every New Mexico player got into the scoring column Friday and Phillip McDonald's 18 points led four Lobos in double figures as New Mexico topped Nicholls State 83-59 on the first day of the Basketball Travelers World Vision Classic. Anatoly Bose had 20 points and six rebounds for the Colonels (0-3). New Mexico (3-0) led from the 14-minute mark of the first half when it started an 11-minute, 24-4 run to go up 33-15. The lead never slipped into single digits. McDonald got plenty of offensive help as Darington Hobson scored 14, Dairese Gary 13 and Roman Martinez 10. Martinez and A.J. Hardeman grabbed a game-high eight rebounds each.

W. Volleyball. Lobo Volleyball Loses Tough Match At TCU, 3-2

The University of New Mexico volleyball team could not stop a determined TCU team on the Frogs' Senior Night, losing 3-2 after taking a 2-0 lead. The Lobos won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-19, but TCU got on a roll after the intermission, winning the final three sets, 25-20, 25-23 and 15-11. UNM is now 19-9 overall and finishes 10-6 in Mountain West Conference play.

Cross Country. Lobos Set To Make History At NCAA Championships

For the first time in history, New Mexico will send both its men's and women's teams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships together. The Lobos will be one of 31 teams and 255 total runners in each nationally televised (live on VERSUS and streamed on NCAA.com) race on Monday morning at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's 10K (6.2 miles), starts at 10:08 a.m. (Mountain), followed by the women's 6K (3.7 miles) race at 10:58.

If you try to delve into this gutsy group of New Mexico seniors and pluck out a single Lobo who deserves victory Saturday more than another, it becomes an impossible chore. This band of Lobo seniors is more than deserving of victory as a group because of how they have endured defeat, how they have faced criticism, how they have braved adversity. However, there is one Lobo because of the nature of his position, who probably has shouldered an unfair portion of the burden.

Baseball. Lobo Baseball Signs Seven to National Letters of Intent

University of New Mexico head baseball coach Ray Birmingham has announced the signing of seven future Lobos to the Lobo baseball team. Coach Birmingham and his staff have brought in some of the nation's best players from around the country and from the state of New Mexico. UNM has received national letters of intent from Chance Bragg, Jake McClasland, Eli Freese, Andrew Schugel, Jose Sierra, Sam Wilson and Justin Zumwalde.

Lobo senior Simon Ejdemyr called it "surreal" and that pretty much summed up the 2-1 overtime loss to Portland that ended the University of New Mexico's season and the Lobos' NCAA run. It seemed like on a chilly Thursday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex that time froze and so did a number of Lobos, but not two Portland Pilots, who teamed up for the "golden goal" in overtime. "It just feels so surreal," said Ejdemyr. "It's unbelievable that it happened like that."

M. Golf. Lobo Golfers Chip in for Run For Relief

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men's golf team led the pack at the 2009 UNM Student Lettermen Run for Relief fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 15, raising the most amount of money among the Lobos' participating athletic programs. All of New Mexico's men's golfers took part in the fundraiser, which raised over $2,300 according to Kim Feldman, the director of the UNM Alumni and Student Lettermen. The men's golf team has taken part in the event in each of the ten years the UNM Student Letterman have held it, and have raised the most amount of money for seven straight years.

New Mexico's busy stretch hits full gallop this weekend as its plays host to the World Vision Classic Friday through Sunday. The four-team field features the Lobos (2-0), Louisiana Tech (1-0), Miami, Ohio (0-2) and Nicholls State (0-2) playing each other over three days. For the Lobos, it will be a 4-games-in-6-days stint that started Tuesday with a gritty 97-87 triumph at New Mexico State. UNM takes on Nicholls State Friday at 8:37 p.m. My50-TV will televise the game live.

Lobo TV: Postgame Press Conference

The Lobos came out and shot 71 percent in the first 11 minutes, but were doomed by 25 percent shooting in the second half and were knocked out of the preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament 70-56 by Oklahoma State. The Lobos held Cowgirl guard Andrea Riley to no field goals in the first half, but she ended the Wednesday night WNIT battle with a game-high 22 points. Lobo Amanda Best led UNM with 15 points and Lauren Taylor had 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Really, it was almost a perfect victory for Lobo coach Steve Alford. His Lobos escaped Las Cruces with a dramatic, come-from-behind 97-87win over the Aggies and he gets to go back to The Pit and work on one of his true loves of basketball -- defense. The Lobos ran to a 19-point 55-36 lead in the second half by shooting lights out, then allowed NMSU to climb up by four by shooting lights out, beforethe Lobos put themselves one game away from an Aggie sweep with a 10-point win in the Pan American Center.

Jeremy Fishbein's University of New Mexico Lobos powered their way into the NCAA Tournament and a hurt that hovered in the fringes of this talented team's prideful consciousness was swept into the past. The Lobos rode their respect as a program, their undeniable talent, and their strong RPI ranking into a first-round NCAA battle at 7 p.m. Thursday at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos intended victim is Portland, a team that lost to the Lobos in Albuquerque in 2004 NCAA play.
