W. Basketball. Stevens: Utah ends Lobos' MWC Tourney Run 51-45 In Overtime

MWC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
The New Mexico Lobos' defense and the shooting of Eileen Weissmann and Sarah Halasz wasn't enough to carry UNM to a Mountain West tourney win over Utah. The Utes got a huge 3-pointer from senior Kalee Whipple with 39 seconds left in overtime and Utah scratched out a 51-45 quarterfinal win. The Lobos are expected to continue playing with a postseason invite from the NIT.

Baseball. Lobo Baseball Defeats New Mexico State, 13-4

Senior Justin Howard went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and junior Mike Lachapelle scattered nine hits over eight innings to lead the Lobo baseball team to a 13-4 win over in-state rival New Mexico State today at Isotopes Park. New Mexico improves to 9-5 on the season. New Mexico State falls to 10-7. With the Lobo victory the two teams split the season series at 2-2.

The snow held off for most of the day and teams needed a little bit of luck on the first day of the 2010 NCAA National Ski Championships at Mt. Werner in Steamboat Springs, Colo. The University of New Mexico is in fourth place after the first day of events, the men's and women's giant slalom with 173 points, 5.5 points behind third-place Vermont (178.5) and 66 behind first-place Denver (239). Fellow RMISA member Utah is in second with 196.5 points. The Lobos got three All-America performances from senior Malin Hemmingsson, junior Thomas Schwab and freshman Anne Cecilie Brusletto.

Track. 13th-Ranked Men Lead Lobos To NCAA Indoor Championships

For the second straight year, the University of New Mexico will send a program record four individuals to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which run Friday and Saturday at the University of Arkansas' Randall Tyson Track Center. Seniors Lee Emanuel (mile/3,000m), Rory Fraser (5,000m/3,000m), and Chris Barnicle (5,000m) will represent the 13th-ranked New Mexico men, while fellow senior Sandy Fortner (pentathlon) is the lone women's qualifier. All four Lobos are ranked among the top-10 in their respective events, including top-seeded Emanuel, who is the defending champion in the mile. ESPN360.com will provide live video streaming of all the running event finals with supplemental video of the other events on NCAA.com.

They go into the NCAA Championships a skier short, no longer ranked No. 1 in the nation, but maybe, just maybe, the team to beat. It just of depends on whether all that blue-ribbon Lobo talent skis like it has skied all season -- or not. "I think we`re the team with the most top skiers," said Lobo coach Fredrik Landstedt. The NCAA finals run Wednesday through Saturday in Steamboat Springs, Colo. The Lobos are looking to go from underdogs to top dogs.

Junior Ryan Honeycutt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Lobos in a 14-10 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies at Isotopes Park today. New Mexico tied the game at eight in the bottom of the sixth but gave up four runs in the top of the seventh and two in the top of the ninth. The Lobos fall to 8-5 on the season. The Aggies improve to 10-6 on the season.

It's New Mexico vs. Utah, Amy Beggin vs. Kalee Whipple, Don Flanagan vs. Elaine Elliott, tradition vs. tradition and a do-or-die situation. The only way this thing could be any better is if it was a Mountain West Conference championship game instead of a MWC quarterfinal tussle. The Lobos won their first-round MWC tourney game 67-54 over Colorado State and Utah pounded Air Force 63-40. The two teams battle Wednesday in the MWC tourney being held in the Las Vegas Thomas & Mack Center.

W. Swimming. Stevens: Aubrey Bush Finds MWC Success 33 Feet Above The Water

Lobo Aubrey Bush became the swimming & diving team's first Mountain West Conference champion in five years. It's an amazing feat for a diver who has been competing fewer than three seasons. It's more amazing when you consider that Bush's MWC title came on the platform and the UNM pool has no platform on which Bush can practice. "What she did was amazing," said Lobo dive coach Abel Sanchez.

The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team hosts the New Mexico State Aggies in a two-game midweek series on March 9-10. The Lobos (8-4) will face the Aggies (9-6) for the 226th and 227th time in series history. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. MT for both games. The game will be broadcast statewide on 101.7 FM (KQTM) The TEAM. Lobo football and men's basketball play-by-play annoucer Scott Galetti will call the action live from Isotopes Park.

New Mexico head coach Steve Alford captured Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year, while 6-7 Lobo junior Darington Hobson was the first MWC player to ever grab both the Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards in the same season. After never earning coach of the year honors in his first 13 seasons at the Div. I level, Alford has made it two in a row after leading UNM to consecutive Mountain West Conference regular-season titles.

It will be a tough journey for Don Flanagan's Lobos. A journey that begins Tuesday against a young and scrappy Colorado State team and, if continued, likely would go through the heart of the MWC: Utah, TCU and either Brigham Young or San Diego State. "Whatever it is, bring it on, let's play it," said Flanagan.

The University of New Mexico Lobo baseball team split a doubleheader with USC, losing 6-2 and winning 16-7 this afternoon at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles, Calif. In game two senior Justin Howard led the way going 5-for-6 with five RBIs. New Mexico took two out of three games from the Trojans over the weekend. The Lobos are now 8-4 on the season. The Trojans fall to 5-6 on the season.
