Lobos Complete Most Successful Academic Year

The combined grade point average (G.P.A.) of the University of New Mexico's 21 athletics programs for the 2009 spring semester was 3.12. That's the highest spring semester G.P.A. since UNM began tracking grades in 1988, and the second-highest G.P.A. overall. The record of 3.14 was set in the fall of 2008, meaning the top-two semesters were achieved in the past two terms. The Lobos have now reached a G.P.A. of 3.00 or better for 13 of the past 14 semesters. "The student-athletes, coaches, advisement staff and mentors are to be congratulated for an outstanding performance during the 2008-09 academic term," said UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs.

M. Basketball. Wyking Jones Named Men's Assistant Basketball Coach

Wyking (WHY-king) Jones begins his first season as men's assistant basketball coach at the University of New Mexico. Jones replaces Chris Walker, who last month accepted a similar position at Villanova, his alma mater. Jones, 36, spent the past two years as a travel team manager with Nike. Prior to Nike, Jones worked five seasons (2002-06) at Pepperdine as an assistant to head coach Paul Westphal.

W. Basketball. New Mexico Set To Participate In 2009 Preseason WNIT

The New Mexico women's basketball team has been one of 16 teams selected to participate in the 2009 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. The three-game guaranteed tournament kickoffs on Nov. 13 with the championship game held on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Lobos will open the event at home against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. MT on Friday, Nov. 13. New Mexico is the only Mountain West Conference school participating in the event.

University of New Mexico head women's soccer coach Kit Vela and her staff have announced the dates for the Lobo Women's Soccer Academy this summer. Coach Vela and her staff have put together camps from every skill level and help young athletes learn the techniques of a Division I program. New to the Academy this summer is the addition of the Lobo Women's Soccer Goalkeeper Academy. Taught by assistant coach Jorge Vela each camp will feature helpful instruction for current and future net minders. All programs will take place on the home training facilities of the Lobo women's soccer team, Robertson Field. This years camps offered at a discounted price.

Albuquerque, N.M.-The University of New Mexico announced that former student athlete Michelle Heidbrink has been named assistant women's tennis coach. Heidbrink, a Manhattan Beach, Calif. native will be leaving Palm Desert High School in Palm Desert, Calif. where she led the team to an undefeated season in 2009 (22-0).

The softball roots of Jennifer Ogee are pedigree, the real stuff. She has performed at the highest level on the diamond both as a player and as a coach. She has been-there, done-that behind the plate, at the plate, and also in the coaching box. She has played and coached in a national championship game at Washington. She was a member of the U.S. National Team. She helped mold the Nebraska Cornhuskers into one of the top hitting teams in the Big 12. It's difficult to decide which part of Ogee's history in softball will be the most impressive to current and future Lobos. One thing is for sure: the Lobos have landed a diamond with a outfield of knowledge to share and pass on to UNM players.

W. Golf. Ewart Ties for 10th at Irish Open; Top Amateur in the Field

University of New Mexico women's golfer Jodi Ewart tied for 10th place at the AIB Ladies Irish Open played this weekend at the Portmarnock Links in Dublin, Ireland. Highlighted by a hole-in-one in the second round, Ewart finished at 2-under 214 (74-69-71). She was the top amateur in the 129-player field.On Saturday, Ewart aced the par-3, 165-yard 3rd hole on her way to a 3-under 69. Ewart, who will be a senior at UNM in 2009-10, was a first team All-American for the Lobos last season. She is a three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year.

Sure, there is fun and laughter, good food and good camaraderie, but there also is serious stuff like classroom teaching and real football drills on the turf. ""Today they are in our shoes. Lobo swim coach Tracy Ljone went to an Ironman competition in Idaho just hoping to finish and shocked herself a bit by qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in October. Ljone was the first woman swimmer out of the water at 2.4 miles which paced her to a No. 3 finish in the 30-to-34 age division.

2009 Lobo Volleyball Schedule

University of New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson recently released the 2009 Lobo volleyball schedule. The schedule features seven teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including Mountain West Conference foes Colorado State and Utah. Two of the five non-conference opponents, Delaware and Portland State, will come to Albuquerque in August for the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. The Lobos will face American in the Nike Portland Invitational and Tulane in the Arizona Invitational in September. The annual Rio Grande Rivalry match-up with New Mexico State is set for Oct. 13 in Las Cruces.

The Lobo men's golf team missed the NCAA postseason play in 2008 for the first time since 1985 and a return to the NCAA wars was a huge goal for the Glen Millican Lobos in 2009. The Lobos accomplished that goal, won a tourney team title, and and took medalist honors four times. Senior Steve Saunders also was the MWC Player of The Year and a Ping All-American. "We have expectations with this program and we achieved many of those expectations this year," said Millican.
