The combined grade point average (G.P.A.) of the University of New Mexico's 21 athletics programs for the 2009 spring semester was 3.12. That's the highest spring semester G.P.A. since UNM began tracking grades in 1988, and the second-highest G.P.A. overall. The record of 3.14 was set in the fall of 2008, meaning the top-two semesters were achieved in the past two terms. The Lobos have now reached a G.P.A. of 3.00 or better for 13 of the past 14 semesters. "The student-athletes, coaches, advisement staff and mentors are to be congratulated for an outstanding performance during the 2008-09 academic term," said UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs.

Wyking (WHY-king) Jones begins his first season as men's assistant basketball coach at the University of New Mexico. Jones replaces Chris Walker, who last month accepted a similar position at Villanova, his alma mater. Jones, 36, spent the past two years as a travel team manager with Nike. Prior to Nike, Jones worked five seasons (2002-06) at Pepperdine as an assistant to head coach Paul Westphal.

The New Mexico women's basketball team has been one of 16 teams selected to participate in the 2009 Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. The three-game guaranteed tournament kickoffs on Nov. 13 with the championship game held on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Lobos will open the event at home against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. MT on Friday, Nov. 13. New Mexico is the only Mountain West Conference school participating in the event.

Albuquerque, N.M.-The University of New Mexico announced that former student athlete Michelle Heidbrink has been named assistant women's tennis coach. Heidbrink, a Manhattan Beach, Calif. native will be leaving Palm Desert High School in Palm Desert, Calif. where she led the team to an undefeated season in 2009 (22-0).

University of New Mexico head women's soccer coach Kit Vela and her staff have announced the dates for the Lobo Women's Soccer Academy this summer. Coach Vela and her staff have put together camps from every skill level and help young athletes learn the techniques of a Division I program. New to the Academy this summer is the addition of the Lobo Women's Soccer Goalkeeper Academy. Taught by assistant coach Jorge Vela each camp will feature helpful instruction for current and future net minders. All programs will take place on the home training facilities of the Lobo women's soccer team, Robertson Field. This years camps offered at a discounted price.

Lobo Great Urlacher Named To ESPN NFL All-Decade Defense

The honors have been rolling in this week for former Lobo All-American Brian Urlacher. He had the field at the UNM Indoor Practice Facility named for him on Wednesday and a day earlier was named to ESPN's NFL All-Decade Defense. Urlacher was joined by Baltimore's Ray Lewis and Derrick Brooks, formerly of Tampa Bay, at the linebacker spots. more |

Really, there is no finish line in sight for Lobos' track and cross country coach Joe Franklin, even though the nature of his sport draws lines where winners are found and crowned. Franklin is more like a javelin or discus guy. He keeps reaching for marks a little more further out than his last heave. With Franklin, there are marks you can reach out and feel. They are solid, with form and substance. There are runners breaking the tape at the finish line. There are facts, stats and progress that prove that New Mexico has one of the fastest growing track & field/cross country programs in the nation. more |

The University of New Mexico announced today former Lobo great DonTrell Moore will be the emcee at Monday's Lobo Country Tour luncheon at the Chamisa Hills Country Club in Rio Rancho. A four-time first team all-Mountain West Conference honoree (2002-05), Moore rewrote both the UNM and MWC career rushing records, and was the sixth player in NCAA FBS history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons. more |
