Lobos Face Tough Test in Utah State on Saturday

New Mexico Game Notes | Utah State Game Notes | Mountain West Notes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico football team still has attainable goals, most importantly a third consecutive bowl game.  To get there, the Lobos will have to win three of their final four games, starting on Saturday afternoon when the Lobos take on Utah State at 3:38 p.m. at Dreamstyle Stadium in a game that can be viewed regionally on AT&T SportsNet (formerly ROOT Sports).

New Mexico has scuffled of late with a three-game losing streak, although the one home game in that stretch was a close, tense 27-24 loss to former league-leader Colorado State.  The Lobos have won two straight in the series against Utah State, a team that also is eyeing bowl eligibility.  In 2015, UNM opened November with a 14-13 win over the Aggies as Utah State missing a game-winning field goal in the final minutes, paving the way to win three of the final four games and make it to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.  Last year, to again open November, UNM won 24-21 with UNM hitting a game-winning field goal in the final minute.  That again paved the way to end the season with three wins in four tries to allow UNM to again get to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

Certainly, the Lobos are looking for deja vu all over again.

To do it, UNM will have to battle through more injuries suffered last Saturday as they could very well be without Chris Estrella on the offensive line, Izzy Castellanos for a third straight week, and leading receiver and punt returner Chris Davis.

The game is Heroes Day in which means there are plenty of activities and great deals, especially as we honor those in the military, first responders, and their families.
