Lobo Track & Field Splits Up Between Bay Area, Texas this Weekend

New Mexico Track & Field splits up between the Bay Area and Texas to begin the outdoor season in earnest on the road this weekend, with UNM’s sprinters and jumpers in the Lone Star State for the Texas Relays (Austin, Texas) and the Bobcat Invitational (San Marcos, Texas) and the Lobos’ distance crew opening up competition at the Stanford Invitational (Palo Alto, Calif) and Mike Fanelli Classic (San Francisco, Calif.) on Friday.

All four meets will have live results, with all but the Bobcat Invitational streamed online. All of this weekend’s live results and streaming links are available in one place at GoLobos.com/TrackResults.

BUSY WEEKEND
This week’s action begins today with just one competitor – sophomore Isabel Thomas – in the “B” section of the women’s pole vault at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos. Friday’s competition takes place for over 12 hours across all four meets, beginning with the men’s 4x100m relay (Gal Arad, Victor Akhalu, Jose Cornejo, Elijah Williams) and the women’s long jump (Elizabeth White, Lauren Fowler) both getting underway at 8 a.m. over in Austin at the Texas Relays (All times MT).

Competition in San Marcos picks up again with more pole vault at 1 p.m. on Friday, with Kiara Quezada-Arzate (3rd place at 2024 MW Indoor Championships) and Maja Gebauer (No. 2 on UNM indoor all-time list) opening things up in the women’s “A” section and freshman Kyle Hatler competing in the men’s “A” section when they wrap up. 400m hurdles competition featuring Annamaria Leszczynska on the women’s side and Levente Soos, Jacob Cavanaugh and Tim Harris on the men’s side are up next at 4 and 4:40 p.m. before the final competition of the day at TSU.

In Palo Alto, seven heats of men’s and women’s 1500m action will run from roughly 1:30 p.m. until Samuel Field closes things out in the invitational section at 8:25 p.m., with Sophia McDonnell making her steeplechase season debut in the second section at 6:24 p.m. Simultaneously, four other Lobos — Kane Shields, Dylan Burrows, Harriet Tuson and Hanna Bruckmayer — will be competing in alternating men’s and women’s 1500m heats across the bay at San Francisco State that get going at 2:35 p.m.

Up next at Stanford, MW Indoor 5,000m Champion Mercy Kirarei will compete in her first collegiate outdoor 5K in the second-fastest heat at 8:56 p.m. before Hanna Bruckmayer and Nicola Jansen both take on their first collegiate 10,000m race in the invitational section. Night One at Stanford is set to wrap up close to midnight, with three Lobo men — Vincent Chirchir, Evans Kiplagat, Thomas Termote — closing things out in the fastest 10,000m race of the night.

The final day of the Bobcat Invitational for UNM opens and closes with men’s relay races — the men’s 4x100m will make its second appearance of the weekend (Gal Arad, Victor Akhalu, Jose Cornejo, Elijah Jefferson) first at 11:50 a.m., with women’s and men’s 400m racing (Rebecca Grieve, Annamaria Leszczynska, Brodie Young) beginning at 1:30 p.m. At 2:10 p.m., Elizabeth White returns to run her first 100m dash since the 2022 season competing for Southern Utah, when she put down a 12.23 personal best. Four Lobo men (Gal Arad, Victor Akhalu, Jose Cornejo, Elijah Williams) will also race in the 100m before UNM’s men’s 4x400m relay (Brodie Young, Levente Soos, Jacob Cavanaugh, Tim Harris) closes things out at 3:10 p.m.

The Lobos’ distance contingent wraps up their stay in the Bay Area with 800m racing at both Stanford and Mike Fanelli Classic, with Sarah Eckel, Harriet Tuson and Sophia McDonnell up first at 1:15 p.m. at SF State before Luke Cunningham and Elijah Stenberg compete on the men’s side at 2:30 p.m. At the same time, Klara Dess (4), Gabriella K. Szabo (6) and Harriet Tuson (8) will race in three separate heats at Stanford before six Lobo men compete in five heats that begin at 2:59 p.m., culminating in 2022 Indoor All-American Ethan Brouw competing in the invitational heat.
