Congratulations to Coach Don Flanagan and the women's basketball team on winning the MWC Championship and qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the 6th straight year. In the highly competitive world of women's college basketball and given the parity in the game, six straight trips to the NCAA's is a truly noteworthy accomplishment. I would encourage our fans to celebrate these outstanding accomplishments and not take this incredible success of our women's program for granted.
Coach Flanagan and his staff have done a remarkable job in developing this team and they played the best basketball of the season in the conference championships. Hopefully we can continue this strong play into the NCAA Tournament. Great teams have great internal leadership and the play of the three seniors along with Brandi and Dionne have been a key down the stretch.
Best of luck to the coach and the team in the NCAA's!

I have been remiss in not commenting on the retirement of Matt and Mark Henry. These two outstanding coaches have dedicated their lives to the sport of track and field and recently announced they are retiring. They are Lobos who truly bleed cherry and silver. They will be sorely missed and their departure will be a loss the UNM athletic family. As much as I tried, I could not convince them to stay on and I respect their decision to leave on their terms.
What should not be questioned, however, is our commitment to and the support of the sport of track and field. UNM has great tradition in the sport and it is our desire to return our program to national prominence. For those who might doubt our commitment we recently resurfaced the outdoor track, have access to a world class indoor track, host a number of regional indoor meets, are in the process of installing a new scoreboard at the track, and have committed to fully funding the track scholarships on the men's side.
I am truly sorry to see Matt and Mark Henry leave at a time when the commitment to track is increasing rather than waning and as many I am saddened by the fact they will not benefit from the fruits of their struggles. The future, however, for our track and field program is bright.
