Klaesson and Resaland Lead Nordic Team at CU Invite
Jan. 12, 2013
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. -- Senior Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson and sophomore newcomer Mats Rudin Resaland paced the University of New Mexico Nordic team on Saturday in the 15/20K mass start freestyle race at the University of Colorado/Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational, a Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association competition, in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
The skiers faced frigid temperatures. The high in Steamboat Springs on Saturday was 12 degrees, which was reached in the afternoon, after the races were over.
Klaesson, a native of Oslo, Norway, just missed a podium spot, finishing fourth in the 15K race (46:59.4). It's the sixth top-5 finish in RMISA competition of Klaesson's career. Resland, a native of Kongsberg, Norway, finished fifth in the men's 20K (54:35.4).
"Linn had a very good race," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said."She was right in it and she was one of the top girls in the last 3 kilometers or so. Mats looked a little tired today, but he hung in there really tough and picked off some guys toward the end."
The women's team accumulated 100 points while the men tallied 86 to move the Lobos' team total to 578, enough to maintain their spot in third place. Joanne Reid and Rune Oedegaard, both of Colorado, were the individual winners and helped the Buffs take over first place from the University of Denver. CU added 229 points to bring their total score to 646 on the first day of Nordic events. The Pioneers got 197 points and are ahead of the Lobos with 620.5 points.
Tomorrow's 5/10K interval classical race is the final event of the meet. It will be another cold day for the skiers as tomorrow's expected high is three degrees.
"Clara hung in there tough, dropping back a little at the end, but overall, she had a good race," Landstedt said. "Anni was a little bit back from the start and then picked it up in the last lap and picked off about five skiers."
"Tomorrow we're looking for the team to do better than they did today with a few more guys picking it up and few more of the women improving on their times," Landstetd said.
