Nord Leads Lobos in DU Invite Freestyle
Jan. 19, 2013
MINTURN, Colo. -- Sophomore Anni Nord posted a career best fourth-place finish and led the University of New Mexico Nordic team in the women's 5K freestyle race at the University of Denver Invitational on Saturday in Minturn, Colo. The Lobo women finished second in the seven-team field to help UNM maintain it's third-place spot in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association event.
Host Denver holds on to first place with 639 points, but is followed closely by Colorado who has 619 points. The Buffaloes got a solid effort from their Nordic team and won freestyle event with 233 points (men - 100 and women - 133).
The Lobos' overall score of 574 points puts them just ahead of fourth-place Utah who has 569 points. Alaska Anchorage rounds out the top five with 512 points.
Nord, a native of Tammela, Finland, finished the race in 16:06.2 and tallied 41 points for the Lobos. Sophomore Clara Chauvet followed Nord, finishing a season-high sixth place in 16:34.6. Linn Håvelsrud Klaesson, a senior, was the final point earner for the women, taking 11th with a time of 16:47.8.
"It was a very good day for the Nordic women," head coach Fredrick Landstedt said. "Mats Rudin Resaland also skied very well."
Resaland led the UNM men for the third consecutive RMISA meet, finishing fifth in the men's 10K freestyle race with a time of 27:14.3. The sophomore from Kongsberg, Norway was just seconds and a little bit of bad luck away from a podium finish.
"Mats had third place locked down when another skier fell in front of him near the finish," Landstedt recounted. "Mats fell and broke a pole and lost around 10 seconds. He finsihed four second from fourth and five seconds from third."
Sunday is the final day of the DU Invite and will feature a 10/15K mass start classical race.
"Tomorrow will be a very interesting mass start race," Landstedt said. "The course is very twisting and turning and there are a lot of fast downhill spots with sharp turns. It will lead to some mass crashes and broken poles."
