Lobos In 5th at Western State Invitational

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. --- The New Mexico ski team is currently in fifth place through seven events at the Western State Invitational with 360 points. Due to poor visibility and snow conditions on Friday, the men's giant slalom was postponed and will be made up at Taos on Thursday, Feb. 7, a day prior to the University of New Mexico Invitational.
On Saturday, all four events went off without a hitch. Sophomore Polina Ermoshina picked up her fourth Top-10 finish of the season with a ninth-place rank in the women's freestyle. Melanie Zemp was the next Lobo finisher in 18th, followed by Crystin Jaques in 28th. On the men's side, freshman Simon Reissmann finished just outside of the Top-10 for the second day in a row with 11th-place in the men's freestyle. Casey Dyck finished 23rd, followed by Martin Kaas in 27th.
The Alpine squad was able to complete the slalom competition on Saturday. After putting up a career-best sixth place finish in the giant slalom on Friday, junior Karin Ohlin led the Lobos in the women's slalom with a fifth-place finish. Malin Hemmingsson finished 12th in the race, followed by Lene Kaasa in 46th.
Up Next --- The Lobos will host the University of New Mexico Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at Taos and Red River, N.M. This will be the final collegiate competition before NCAA Regionals on Feb. 22-23 in Bridger Bowl, Mont.
