Ermoshina and Demetz Take 2nds In Women's Races at DU Invitational
Feb. 6, 2009
WINTER PARK/DEVIL'S THUMB, Colo. --- The University of New Mexico ski team earned three top-five finishes today at the University of Denver Invitational. Junior Polina Ermoshina finished second in the women's 5-kilometer classic race at Devil's Thumb for the Lobo Nordic squad. Freshman Stefanie Demetz and junior Estelle Pecherand-Charmet finished second and third in the women's giant slalom race at Winter Park.
New Mexico is currently in seventh place with 209 points after four events on the first day of the meet.
Ermoshina matched her career-best finish in the women's 5K classic, just behind defending NCAA champion Maria Grevsgaard of Colorado. Senior Melanie Zemp recorded her best finish of the season in 11th place.
The Nordic men struggled a bit in the 10-kilometer classical race, despite a season-best 12th place finish by junior Tor-Hakon Hellebostad. Sophomore Simon Reissmann is recovering by being ill and is expected to have a stronger day tomorrow in the freestyle.
"Polina had a great race today and was only beaten by Maria," said Lobo head coach Fredrik Landstedt. "Melanie had her best race of the year. The men were a bit back today, but Tor-Hakon is really coming on in classical races."
Demetz recorded her best finish of the season and fifth in the top-6 in the women's giant slalom. Pecherand-Charmet's third-place finish was the fifth time this season that the junior from France has finished in second or third in the event.
The top two men's Alpine skiers had a rough day. Petter Brenna and Nikolai Herlofson Finne did not finish the first run of the day in men's giant slalom. Sophomore Thomas Schwab was the top Lobo finisher in 14th place, less than 2 seconds behind the winner.
"The women did very well today with Stefanie and Estelle finishing 2-3," said Lobo Alpine coach Martin Kroisleitner. "Thomas skied well in a very tight race, while Malin, Petter and Nikolai were a bit unlucky in their first runs."
Competition continues on Saturday with the Nordic 10K/15K freestyle races at Devil's Thumb and the Alpine slalom races at Winter Park.
