Lobos Win Jade Enterprises/New Mexico Invitational

RED RIVER/TAOS, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico ski team won the 2010 Jade Enterprises/UNM Invitational today with 961 points. Anne Cecilie Brusletto, Martin Kaas and Petter Brenna won three of the four events on Day 2, while seven more Lobos put up top-10 finishes. UNM out-paced the field by 160 points, ahead of second-place Colorado with 801. The Nordic men squad pulled off an amazing 1-2-3-4 finish in the 10-kilometer freestyle. Kaas won his fifth race of the season and second freestyle race of the year, edging out senior Tor-Hakon Hellebostad by 0.4 seconds in second place. Freshman Pierre Niess placed third three second later with junior Simon Reissmann in fourth another 2.4 seconds later. The team earned a perfect 141 points. On the women's side, senior Polina Ermoshina placed fourth to lead the Lobos, followed by freshman Linn Klaesson and sophomore Ingrid Leask for 86 points.
The Alpine squad won the day in slalom races. Brenna, a sophomore, earned the eighth win of his Lobo career, after taking over first place on the UNM men's Alpine career wins list yesterday with a giant slalom win. Junior Thomas Schwab picked up a third-place finish and freshman Chris Acosta finished sixth to give UNM 131 points.
Brusletto, a freshman, earned her first slalom win as a Lobo. Freshman Kate Williams placed third, followed by senior Malin Hemmingsson in fifth for 133 points and the team win. The Lobos will be off for two weeks before the University of Nevada Invitational, Feb. 19-20 in Reno.
