Strong Alpine Day Moves Lobos to Fourth at Utah Invite

LOVELAND, Colo. -- Junior Juho-Pekka Penttinen finished a season-best second-place to lead the Lobos in the slalom event in Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association action at the Utah Invitational on Thursday in Loveland, Colo. The UNM men's team finished second in the event and the women's team was third to move New Mexico up to fourth place in the Invite standings through downhill events.
Denver swept the event with both their women's and men's teams taking first and took over first place with 476 points. Colorado (440 points) maintained its spot in second, while Utah (392) dropped two spots to third place. Montana State (309 points) slipped to fifth and Alaska Anchorage (227 points) remains in sixth.
Penttinen, a native of Kuopio, Finland, posted a time of 1:34.98, finishing just behind Denver's Espen Lysdahl who's total time was 1:34.03. It's the first podium finish for Penttinen this season and the sixth top-five finish of his career.
Chris Acosta and Joonas Rasanen were the other two point scorers for the Lobo men. Acosta, a senior, nabbed his fourth top-10 finish of the season as he placed sixth (1:36.00), while Rasanen claimed ninth place (1:36.28) and tallied his fourth top-10 finish.
Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women for the second-consecutive day as she placed fifth with a total time of 1:39.53.
The Nordic portion of the Utah Invitational begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the 5/10K classical in Soldier Hollow, Utah.
The Alpine team returns to New Mexico for the Alpine events of the UNM Invite being held at the Red River Ski Area in Red River, N.M., on Saturday and Sunday.
