Lobo Ski Takes Sixth at Alaska Anchorage Invitational

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The University of New Mexico Nordic and Alpine ski teams each competed in separate invitationals today. The Alpine team wrapped up the Alaska Anchorage Invitational, where the Lobos finished sixth and the Nordic team was completing the second day of the Seawolf Invitational, where the Lobos remain in fifth place. Alaska Anchorage Invitational Poor racing conditions at the Alyeska Ski Resort continued to hamper the Alpine events. The men's and women's slalom races were run, but the conditions made things very challenging. The conditions didn't seem to affect Kate Williams, however, as the junior came through in a huge way after claiming a podium spot with a second-place finish. "It was tough conditions once again for the alpine races," head Alpine coach Tyler Shepherd said. "But, overall it turned out okay with Kate getting a great result." Unfortunately, the other two Lobo women skiers didn't fare as well as Williams. Stefanie Demetz came in 23rd and Mary Rachel Hostetter finished 25th, as the course got the best of the both of them. On the men's side, Joonas Rasanen had the top finish after placing eighth, which is his highest finish in any race this season. Chris Acosta also had his best finish of the season, placing 13th. Armin Triendl and Sean Horner rounded out the men's results with 22nd- and 24th-place finishes, respectively. "The men had even tougher conditions with larger ruts in the course than the women had to deal with," Shepherd said. "They can do better, but it with these conditions, it is just plain difficult." Women's Slalom Men's Slalom Women's Giant Slalom Men's Giant Slalom Nordic Classical Women's 5K Nordic Classical Men's 5K Nordic Freestyle Women's 10K Nordic Freestyle Men's 10K Seawolf Invite The UNM men's and women's Nordic skiers had their best day on the mountain this year, after competing in the classical races on day two of the Seawolf Invite. The Lobos remained in fifth overall, but the women placed two skiers in the top 10 and four in the top 15, while the men had recorded their best finishes this season, placing two skiers in the top 10. "Today we had our best competition of the year so far," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said. "Everyone improved or tied their best classical result for the season. Christian Otto and Sjur Prestseater finished the race neck-and-neck, as Otto took seventh and Prestseater claimed eighth. The only other Lobo in the field, Eivind Solberg, finished in 22nd. This is the first time this season the men have had two skiers finish in the top 10 in the same race, which is a great positive after the battle the team has had with illness. "Christian had his best race of the year finishing a very strong seventh," Landstedt said. Linn Klaesson led the way for the women, crossing the finish line in fifth place. The junior was followed by Anni Nord (ninth), Clara Chauvet (12th) and Anita Kirvesniemi (13th). It is the closest all of the women have finished around each other all season. "Linn skied great," Landstedt said. "In all, it was a very good finish to our races in Alaska. We are excited to come back to Albuquerque to start preparing for regionals."
