NCAA Championships Day 1 Results

BOZEMAN, Montana - The University of New Mexico ski team sits in ninth-place after day one of competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships.

No. 4 ranked Dartmouth is the leader upon completion of day one after the Nordic freestyle races, scoring 214 points. Vermont, ranked No. 3, is in second with 183, thanks to all three of its women finishing in the top eight spots. The nation's top ranked team, Utah, is in third with 179 points, followed by host Montana State in fourth (176).

Freshman Clara Chauvet had the biggest day out of all the Lobos after placing 12th in the women's 5K Freestyle. It was a nice finish for the young Lobo, who just missed All-America honors by two spots. Chauvet was followed by Linn Klaesson, who did not have the type of finish she was hoping for. Klaesson crossed the finish line in 24th place. It was the first time all season the junior from Oslo, Norway, failed to place in the top 10 of a race. The scoring for the women was wrapped up when Anni Nord claimed 28th.

"Clara had a good race going and would have been top 10 had she not fallen in the last downhill," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said.

On the men's side, Christian Otto was the top finisher for the Lobos, placing 28th. He was followed by freshman Sjur Prestseater, who claimed 34th.

Christian had a bad back and could not do himself justice today," said Landstedt. "Overall, it was a very poor day."

It wasn't they type of day New Mexico was looking for, but tomorrow brings a new day and a new competition as the very tough alpine team takes to the slopes. Competition begins with the women's giant slalom, set to take place at 9 a.m. MT and that will be followed by the men's giant slalom at 1 p.m. The races are streamed live through NCAA.com and can be seen by clicking here.
