Steamboat Springs, Colo. - The University of New Mexico womens Alpine dominated the Rocky Mountain Trophy Skiing races at Steamboat Springs, Colo. this week in their final tune-up before the start of the 2003 collegiate season. On Monday, the Lobos competed in the first of two slalom races and place five skiers in the top-16. UNM took home three of the top four finishes when juniors Caroline Schicht and Jennifer Delich and freshman Kathrin Spendier placed 2nd-4th respectively. Freshmen Gladys Weidt and Jennifer Shively placed 13th and 16th in their first action as a Lobo. The second of the two womens races took place on Tuesday with Spendier taking the top spot in the field of over 80 racers. She beat out teammate Schicht, who placed second in the race, by more than a full second in her combined runs. Delich placed fourth in the race while Shively showed a big improvement with a jump to 5th place. Sophomore Helena Woodrow over came a DNF on Monday to place 23rd in the event. On the mens side, only two skiers competed for the Lobos in the two mens slalom races. Sophomore Gottfried Schwarzmueller had the best showing for the men with a 28th place finish in Mondays race. The Lobos now travel to Big Sky, Mont. for the first Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association race of the year hosted be Montana State.
